Safety for your Castle

Your home is your castle, your safe haven and break-in could crush you and your family’s feeling of security. There’s no bulletproof way from securing your home, by taking preventive measures you can reduce the risks from being burglarized.

  • Secure your exterior doors with a solid core or metal clad door frames. Try to get a good quality deadbolt door lock with security strike plates. Recommended door locks with a single-cylinder deadbolt lock and reinforce with strike plate (with three-inch screws). Also try to get entrance doors that have wide angle peepholes or view-grills so you can see who is there before opening the door.
  • A security bar should be place in the slide channel of your glass sliding door and windows or try to secure it with locks.
  • Eliminate dark places by installing exterior lights or by adding motion detector lights.
  • Cut or trim huge bushes or shrubs that may be covering the windows and door way, because it makes it easy for burglars to hide.
  • Take an inventory of your personal property. Even better to mark it and take a picture showing serial number.
  • Keep valuables such as jewelry, inventory of personal property, important documents and records in a fire-retardant home safe or bank’s safety deposit box.
  • If you think of installing security alarm system bought from hardware store or professionally installed, it would be great to test them periodically.
  • Do not leave a spare key under the rug or in a plastic rock.
  • It is advisable to know your community or join a neighborhood watch program. If you notice a suspicious car or unusual activity, take note of license place and date. Who knows that information may become beneficial for police officials?
  • If you know that you may be away from home and you don’t have a family member or neighbor you can trust to periodically check your house, you may want to think of using automatic timers on lights and radio to turn it on and off. Also, consider to lower your telephone ringer volume in your house.

Taking these preventive measures can give you a clear mind, and reviewing your Homeowners policy could provide extra security.
